The full story, Justin and I have been fans of Buzzgrinder for quite some time. Their sarcastic jabs at the music industry and music consumers alike have had a massive amount of influence on how I view the industry and how I seek to relate to it. As a loyal reader for quite a few years now, I became a fan of the semi-regular “A Grand Design” posts where Jay Dinitto would comment on album covers that he came across and noticed a trend of labeling some of these posts as “Nice effort, guys”. These album covers tended to be your run of the mill, post-modern, sans-serif font on a blurry picture or a landscape shot of some field or other arbitrary subject material that has little to no connection to the theme of the album. So when we began recording our EP I started to toy with this idea. I found this picture while looking through flickr for pictures licensed with Creative Commons to be adapted and used commercially and just fell in love with the perspective and the contrast of colors. Justin and I had joked about naming the EP “Nice Effort, Guys.” after Jay Dinitto’s joke and just following in that line of non-art, graphic design. So with trusty picnik, I quickly edited the colors and threw the little circle with our name and the EP title in the top corner. I played with the different fonts and intended this to sort of be a place holder.
As a band we had discussed different ideas for album covers but it never really got anywhere and when it came time to finally put our recordings up on bandcamp I tossed this little picture back into our facebook message stream and it stuck. As musicians we have always taken our writing very seriously but not so much as to become pretentious, so this kind of tongue-in-cheek, non-serious artwork and album title fit our collective personality pretty well. At least, I feel that way…maybe we’re just a couple of jackasses. You decide.
